Outfoxed

It's Saturday- and that means unless you play at night or are deemed worthy to be the Fox game of the week- you're likely not televised.  And since we are not do good, it's not likely we'll be too many games of the week.  No tv.  When we left for London's first birthday party, we were losing 1-0.  Seemed like Lynn was mowing us down pretty well.

Not much changed.  The final was 5-1 Cardinals, but the party was really nice.

Out of the Cellar

A rain delay caused the game to start late- meaning I got to watch all nine innings.  And it was a good one to watch.  The Cubs pounded Adam Wainwright who gave up eight earned runs.  Ian Kennedy and Brian LaHair both went deep- and the Cubs even survived a 5th inning implosion by Samardzija to win this thing 9-5 ruining the world champion's home opener.

Why oh why do I let these guys give me hope?

Brew-Ha Ha

Day game that wasn't televised.  Had the pitch by pitch on in my office and the offense woke up.  I liked seeing that we weren't dependent upon the big hit to win- but were able to string together a bunch of little ones.Greinke got shelled.  Garza pitched 8 2/3 before committing an error and getting yanked.  Cubs win 8-0.

Apparently Garza pulled a Zambrano after getting yanked, losing his temper and all that comes with that.  Big difference, his attempt was to do so privately and once discovered, he apologized to the Tribune writers who witnessed the tirade.

Pitching Duel

So, I won't mind day games so much once school is out- but until then...grr!  I got to watch some while listening to some extemp speeches and having the team meeting.  I left for play practice in the 8th and we were down 2-1- which was the final score.

I should start to cherish days that aren't televised

No game on tv last night.  Jana and I attended a film festival on campus and saw a great documentary about the Rwandan Cycling team.  Meanwhile, Paul Maholm gave up five runs in the first inning and we never recovered.

Another missed opportunity

I actually got to watch this one.  Lucky me.

It was actually a decent game- Cubs have the winning run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth.  Terrible at bat by Castro results in a strikeout- Cubs lose again.

A win? I'd forgotten what that felt like

So- we ate Easter dinner with some folks from church and got home in the bottom of the 8th.  We saw a couple of runs score and were amazed to see that Samardzija was still in the game.  He entered the 9th with a 4-1 lead.  After two outs, an error by Castro prompted a visit to the mound.

Jana had a fit of moral outrage... "it wasn't his fault".  Dale seemed to agree and left him- to serve up a 2-run home run.  Exit Samardzja- Marmol comes in with a 4-3 lead.  He got the out he needed and the Cubs finally get a win.  Glad to see Wrigley still has Steve Goodman cued for those rare W's.

The mound visit following an error occurred in the film "Sugar" that we watched last night involving a Dominican pitcher's difficulty in adapting to baseball in the states.

Bullpen Implosion

No television for the Cubs today.  I kept up for a while on ESPN Gamecast.  When I left for a nap we were down 2-1.  When I came back we were losing 7-4.  It seems we had a 4-2 lead that we blew in a five run eighth.  Kerry Wood gets the loss and Marmol let by three runs without recording an out.  And these are the dependable parts of the pen?

After 2 games, there's an obvious hole to plug...

Off Day

Cubs and Sox both off yesterday.  At least we didn't lose.

Opening Day 4/5

Opening Day and I'm at work.  The Cubs and the Sox both play day games while I'm at school.  Vacation begins this evening...and both teams are off tomorrow.  Perfect timing.

However, I slipped down to the forensics house, hooked up the cable and watched as much as I could.  I saw a couple of innings between Boston and Detroit and at 2 flipped over to WGN.  I saw the opening day announcement of all the players and coaches- I saw Bill Murray bounce the first pitch- I saw Dempster pitch out of trouble in the first and then settle down and outpitch Strasburg for the afternoon.

In between watching three persuasive speeches perform I saw Woody walk in the tying run in the 8th.  I saw Ian Stewart miss tying the game in the 9th by what looked like inches- ending up with a triple.  I saw a pinch runner get thrown out at home plate just a few pitches later.

I saw enough to remember what it feels like to be a Cubs fan.
